7.4.16 We hope everyone is enjoying this holiday with their friends and family. July 4th can be very stressful for dogs with the fireworks. It is also the busiest day for shelters with stray dogs coming in.
A few reminders for keeping dogs safe on this day:
6.15.16 It has been awhile since we gave an update on Jill – affectionately called, “our little Jill.” We will begin by saying THANK YOU to Dianna M. for her providing Jill with a new bed! And, to Dr. Chong for helping with some of Jill’s medications. Due to her heart condition, she is on three medications that are given twice a day. She seems to be doing ok. We almost lost her last June, so every day is a gift. We will be taking her in for her check-up next month. We are guessing Jill is about 12+ years old. Even though she has health issues with her heart condition and compromised eyesight she keeps on keepin on. She is truly an inspiration and a tough little dog. We know she did not have a good life and we are trying to make up for that. We want her to be comfortable and feel loved during the sunset of her life. She will be part of our Nika family until the sun goes down.
5.23.16 This is probably not something you want to see on your morning hike with your dog. This past week we saw a rattlesnake on a trail, but it did not have its’ rattles. It was not a garter snake. It had the protruding jaw line and coloring of a rattlesnake. Please be careful when walking and hiking in rural terrain. Sometimes rattlesnakes will rest quietly under a a bush right off a path and if a dog sniffs it out, it can be deadly. There are rattlesnake vaccines and avoidance training for dogs, but we do not know how effective they really are. Please check with a professional. It is always best to keep dogs leashed and close!
5.20.16 When his owners surrendered him to us, his name was Lincoln. After spending some time with him, we thought a new name would suit him better. Koda came to mind. He responded to it quickly, so we knew it was the right choice. It means “friend” and he will be a loyal friend for someone. We have been working hard to find him the right home that understands Huskies. So often, this beautiful breed is given up because people do not understand what they need. We do not want that to happen to Koda ever again.
Koda was featured on FOX 11’s Pet Project. He has a new name and he is ready for a new chapter in his life!
5.17.16 But, Forever Moms (and Dads) rule even more! This gorgeous photo was sent to us from the wonderful Forever Mom and Dad who adopted Pete over a year ago – we love getting updates from our adopters. The photo taken by photographer Melanie Horn / Fly Dog Photos at a recent event they attended. A picture does say a 1000 words. Pete is so happy and loved. Thankfully, he was given a second chance at life after being surrendered to the shelter. He found wonderful people who have made him part of their family. We are honored to have had the opportunity to foster Pete and be part of his transition to a new life! If you can’t adopt, please consider fostering…it will change your life and the life of a homeless dog.
4.22.16 Snoopy really enjoyed dropping by FOX 11’s Pet Project yesterday, although he is still recovering from Maria and Araksya’s singing. He has made so much progress over the past few months and has really come out of his shell. He still tends to be a bit shy in certain situations, but he is the most loving and devoted dog. It has been so rewarding to see his progress in our foster program. We appreciate the opportunity to present him for adoption.

3.14.16 The Husky is such a beautiful breed and people want them for that reason. But, they are more than just beautiful. Huskies have specific needs that people often do not understand or do not have time for. They are so intelligent and daily exercise is a top priority.
The gorgeous boy is Lincoln and he is about 10 months old. He weighs about 60 pounds, is neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on shots. Lincoln was house trained in the home he came from and he is crate trained. He needs a loving leader who has the time and is committed to working with him on training. Lincoln is a wonderful dog and is at the perfect age for someone to guide him to reach his fullest potential.
