8.14.15 The anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is August 29th. We honor the memory of all the Katrina dogs during August. Nika and I had the privilege of knowing one of them…his name was Atticus. He came to Los Angeles from the 9th Ward/St.Bernard Parish area of Louisiana and was named after the character in To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch.
The Katrina dogs were held for a period of time so their owners could claim them. Nobody ever came forward for Atticus. When we met him, he had been living in a kennel facility for over a year. We fostered him for about eight months, until we found him a forever home in Ojai, CA – at the two year anniversary of Katrina. The photo of him was taken during one of our many hikes.
Atticus was part of our family and made a big impression on our lives. It is hard to imagine what he and the other Katrina dogs went through during that horrible storm. But, he survived and was victorious. Atticus had a big heart and a lot of soul. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago.
Rest in Peace, Atticus….You will never be forgotten. You are a true example of Victory Over Adversity!
