UNTIL WE HIKE AGAIN – MISSING MY BEST FRIEND
(Nika 2000 - October 2017) As we close this year, I sadly share the passing of my precious Nika. It is difficult watching your best friend grow old. You know that day is coming, but when they are actually gone, the silent void is felt and I don't think it ever goes away. I have been putting off writing about Nika's passing because it is painful and I miss her strong presence so much. Writing about it makes it real and that hurts. She was a big part of my life for sixteen years. As I told her many times,...
UNDOING THE DAMAGE OF ABUSE – MYSTERY IS MAKING PROGRESS
7.7.2017 Mystery has been with us about two months now and is making progress. In the last week she has turned a corner and is starting to run up to me wagging her tail and turning over on her back to show me her belly. She is also beginning to follow me around, rather than running and hiding. Although she still will not let me pet her when she is fed, she does take treats. She goes on daily walks with the pack and it has really helped her. In fact, she loves her walks! We will try to...
MYSTERY FEATURED ON FOX 11 PET PROJECT
6.25.17 Mystery stopped by FOX 11 the other day.
HONORING OUR FATHERS TODAY
6.18.17 This day is a reminder to appreciate and honor all our fathers because it is Dog Dads Day! We are so grateful to all the wonderful men who have adopted a homeless dog because you are a truly special dad indeed!
WILLIE FEATURED ON FOX 11’s PET PROJECT
5.28.17 Willie is looking for a forever home with someone who can be with him most of the time, whether retired or working from home - that is the ideal situation for him. After what he has been through, he really needs an attentive and caring person who will love and protect him.
WILLIE SHOWED UP ON A DOORSTEP
5.17.17 Sometimes dogs are a lot wiser than we can even imagine. Willie is a very wise dog indeed. This timid, hairless, malnourished stray found a safe haven on the doorstep of one of our animal angels. The angel opened her door one day and found this little guy sitting on her doorstep. Willie had no I.D. tag or microchip and nobody ever came looking for him. The angel took him under her wing, loved and cared for him and brought him back to good health. We are looking for a very special home for him while his guardian angel...
EVERY DAY IS DOG MOM’S DAY
5.14.17 Every day is Dog Mom's Day at the Nika Animal Network! Some think a mom is only one with human children. We know that is not true. So, we extend a special thank you to all the wonderful moms who have given a homeless, abandoned and neglected animal a loving home because you a mom and mother, too.
A REMINDER ABOUT MICROCHIPS
5.2.2017 It is important to check your dog or cats Microchip. Just because you are told your dog or cat has a chip and the number is listed on your paperwork, please do not assume it is there or active because sometimes things happen. We were told our foster dog, Mystery, was given a Microchip before she left the shelter. In fact, the number is listed on her paperwork. But, when we took her to the vet we checked and there was no chip. Sometimes chips move around, so we checked all of her back and arms, still no chip....
WHO IS THIS?
4.21.17 We're calling her Mystery...this is the first photo she let us take. This beautiful and very shy female Spaniel mix lived in a hoarding situation with many other animals. She was taken to the shelter with all the other dogs and cats, all of whom have been adopted, yet Mystery waited for almost a month with no forever home in sight. Dogs from hoarding cases are often very shy because of neglect and no socialization. It can be difficult for people to connect with an extremely shy dog in a shelter environment, so they simply move on to the...
THE FIRST THING TO CONSIDER WHEN ADOPTING A DOG?
10.17.16 Lifestyle is the first thing to consider when you are looking to adopt a dog. (1) Lifestyle includes energy. Are you a high, medium or low energy person? If you are a high energy, active person who likes to walk, run and hike a higher energy dog will be more suitable for you. If you have a lower energy, preferring a quiet sedentary lifestyle a lower energy dog will be a better match for you. (2) Lifestyle includes your work schedule or how long you are away from home. Do you have time to commit to a dog? (3)...
MEET MAGOO
10.15.16 Update: Magoo is doing great. He has come out of his shell. He has learned to play and loves going on walks now. We think he may like to have a dog friend in his forever home. He has done well with the cats he's met so far. Magoo is very smart and has learned to sit before he eats. He is a little lovebug and we hope the perfect home comes for him soon. ______________________________ Magoo was found as a stray with no tags, no micro-chip and nobody ever came to claim him. It is so hard to...

CHARLIE….HOME AT LAST!
8.28.15 We are excited to announce that Charlie's adoption was finalized yesterday and he went home with his family. About eight weeks ago, he was found in pretty bad shape in an area that is known for abandoned dogs. Thankfully, he found hope and he has many angels looking after him; the angel who found him as a neglected and malnourished stray; the angel who provided him a loving foster home and gave him time to get well; the team of angels who gave him wonderful veterinary care; and now, the angels who adopted him and are now his...
CHARLIE FEATURED ON FOX 11 PET PROJECT
8.23.16 Charlie stopped by FOX 11 for Pet Project. He is doing very well, putting on some weight and getting ready for a new chapter in his life.
CHARLIE
8.13.16 Do you remember Charlie? We posted his picture a few weeks ago as a "lost" dog. As you can see he was a mess, matted hair, he had a bladder infection, ear infection and was not neutered. Well, nobody came forward to claim him. His stray hold is up and we are looking for a great home for him! He is all fixed up now thanks to his wonderful foster mom Diane and veterinarian Dr. Chong. He is a Poodle mix about 2 years old and the sweetest little guy you will ever meet. His is neutered, good with...
SOPHIE STOPPED BY FOX 11 PET PROJECT RECENTLY
8.3.16 Sophie featured on Fox 11 Pet Project recently. She is being adopted. https://youtu.be/b90KC5cUEio
SOPHIE UPDATE
7.19.16 We have not cut the hair on Sophie's head, if you can believe that. With time she is learning to relax and so has her hair! When we first took her out of the shelter, we suspected she may have been mistreated. But, we think her abuse may have been more extensive than we thought. She is still very fearful of strangers. Grooming has been a major challenge, so we have been taking it in very small steps. She has learned to like baths, but she still has a fear of scissors and especially clippers. Nail trims are getting...
IS THIS YOUR DOG?
7.13.16 A good samaratan found this little guy in Ventura County and is trying to find is owner. He had no I.D. tags and no microchip. If this dog looks familiar, please contact us and we will forward your information to the good samaratan that is holding him.
ONE DAY AT TIME
7.13.16 Jill had her health check-up yesterday. Considering her age and health conditions, she is doing well. When the vet saw her, she smiled and said, "Jill is still here!" We have been giving her the three meds as prescribed and she has been doing good. We have a renewed presciption and we will carry on with that. Jill has a few mammary tumors and we have been advised that it would be too stressful and dangerous to do surgery, due to her age and health conditions. Jill appears to feel good, she has a great appetite, loves her...
JULY 4th – HAVE FUN AND KEEP YOUR DOGS SAFE
7.4.16 We hope everyone is enjoying this holiday with their friends and family. July 4th can be very stressful for dogs with the fireworks. It is also the busiest day for shelters with stray dogs coming in. A few reminders for keeping dogs safe on this day: Stay home with your dogs if you can Keep dogs inside Close curtains Put on the stereo or tv If your dog gets extremely stressed during this holiday, consult with your veterinarian about possible remedies.
LITTLE JILL BIG THANK YOU – EVERY DAY IS A GIFT
6.15.16 It has been awhile since we gave an update on Jill - affectionately called, "our little Jill." We will begin by saying THANK YOU to Dianna M. for her providing Jill with a new bed! And, to Dr. Chong for helping with some of Jill's medications. Due to her heart condition, she is on three medications that are given twice a day. She seems to be doing ok. We almost lost her last June, so every day is a gift. We will be taking her in for her check-up next month. We are guessing Jill is about 12+ years...
RATTLESNAKES….BE ALERT AND KEEP DOGS SAFE!
5.23.16 This is probably not something you want to see on your morning hike with your dog. This past week we saw a rattlesnake on a trail, but it did not have its' rattles. It was not a garter snake. It had the protruding jaw line and coloring of a rattlesnake. Please be careful when walking and hiking in rural terrain. Sometimes rattlesnakes will rest quietly under a a bush right off a path and if a dog sniffs it out, it can be deadly. There are rattlesnake vaccines and avoidance training for dogs, but we do not know how...
KODA FEATURED ON FOX 11’s PET PROJECT
5.20.16 When his owners surrendered him to us, his name was Lincoln. After spending some time with him, we thought a new name would suit him better. Koda came to mind. He responded to it quickly, so we knew it was the right choice. It means "friend" and he will be a loyal friend for someone. We have been working hard to find him the right home that understands Huskies. So often, this beautiful breed is given up because people do not understand what they need. We do not want that to happen to Koda ever again. Koda was featured...
FOSTER MOMS RULE!
5.17.16 But, Forever Moms (and Dads) rule even more! This gorgeous photo was sent to us from the wonderful Forever Mom and Dad who adopted Pete over a year ago - we love getting updates from our adopters. The photo taken by photographer Melanie Horn / Fly Dog Photos at a recent event they attended. A picture does say a 1000 words. Pete is so happy and loved. Thankfully, he was given a second chance at life after being surrendered to the shelter. He found wonderful people who have made him part of their family. We are honored to...
SNOOPY FEATURED ON FOX 11’s PET PROJECT
4.22.16 Snoopy really enjoyed dropping by FOX 11's Pet Project yesterday, although he is still recovering from Maria and Araksya's singing. He has made so much progress over the past few months and has really come out of his shell. He still tends to be a bit shy in certain situations, but he is the most loving and devoted dog. It has been so rewarding to see his progress in our foster program. We appreciate the opportunity to present him for adoption. https://youtu.be/9O-v3PEEhoE
WE ARE GRATEFUL TO WHOLE FOODS MARKET – THOUSAND OAKS
3.22.16 We express our gratitude to Whole Foods Market - Thousand Oaks.
CALLING ALL EXPERIENCED HUSKY LOVERS…LINCOLN NEEDS A HOME
3.14.16 The Husky is such a beautiful breed and people want them for that reason. But, they are more than just beautiful. Huskies have specific needs that people often do not understand or do not have time for. They are so intelligent and daily exercise is a top priority. The gorgeous boy is Lincoln and he is about 10 months old. He weighs about 60 pounds, is neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on shots. Lincoln was house trained in the home he came from and he is crate trained. He needs a loving leader who has the time...
SOPHIE FEATURED ON FOX 11’s PET PROJECT
2.19.16 Sophie is the sweetest little dog. We know she looks a little wild with that hair, but she is very well behaved and a little timid until she knows you are not going to hurt her. She is a three year old Poodle / Shih-tzu or Maltese mix who was left at the shelter by her previous owner. Sophie is very loving and just wants to be with her person. She will stand up on her hind legs when she wants you to pick her up. She is great with other dogs and cats. Sophie is going to make...
MEET THE NEWEST MEMBER OF OUR FOSTER FAMILY…..
2.15.17 This is Sophie! We could not believe she has been available at the shelter since February 10th and nobody snatched her up, so we did. Her owners left her at the shelter and when that happens dogs are available for adoption immediately. She is only 3 years old. Sophie is a Poodle mixed with maybe a little Shih-tzu. There is actually a name for that mix, it is called Shih-poo. She is a little shy and getting used to being out of the kennel environment. She seems very sweet and was cooperative with having her picture taken. Let's hope...
HAVE YOU EVER MET A CREATIVE CAT?
2.10.16 The other day while visiting the shelter, we met Sunkist and she was very willing to have her photo taken. She is about 5 years old and very sweet. Found abandoned at a mobile home park in Ventura, CA last November, she would love to be your companion. Sunkist is currently living in the Kitty Cottage at Ventura County Animal Services. Her I.D. # is A633156. To our surprise, we learned she also paints. I guess you could say Sunkist is a Creative Cat!
BEFORE YOU ADOPT, THINK ABOUT THIS
2.2.16 How much time are you willing to put into transitioning a new dog into a home? Thankfully, it doesn't happen very often, but sometimes an adoption falls through. Unfortunately, after only a week in his new home Snoop is back with us. We love him and welcome him with open arms. We are just really disappointed his new home did not work out. After going through the screening process, several meetings and dog intros/walks, and providing a long list of transition guidelines, the other dog was not happy with a new dog in the home. They said Snoop is...
Dog Chapters of 2015
1.11.16 These are the precious dogs that came into our lives during 2015. We are so grateful to the wonderful people who have adopted our foster dogs. We are so grateful to the special people who have supported us with donations. Words really can not express our appreciation...maybe woofs can. Wishing everyone the best for 2016!
DUKE – FOREVER HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
12.18.15 We followed up with Duke and his new parents last week and they are doing great. He is a very happy dog! His new dad takes him out on one or two walks a day and he gets to be inside the house most of the time, which he LOVES. After living with his previous home all of his life, this was a big change for Duke, but it really is the perfect fit and he adjusted immediately. It was interesting to observe him when he first met his new parents, he saw them pull up on the...
#1 BAD GIFT IDEA FOR THE HOLIDAYS
12.7.15. Every holiday season we hear people saying they want to surprise someone with a pet as a gift. It is a very bad idea. In fact, we think it is the #1 bad gift idea for the holidays. Keep the following in mind if you are thinking of adopting a pet or giving one as a surprise gift for the holidays.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
11.26.15 We hope you enjoy Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Be safe and thankful!
SNOOP FEATURED ON FOX 11’s PET PROJECT
11.20.15 Snoop was featured on Fox 11's Pet Project. He is working very hard to find a new home. It was quite a new experience for him and he did great. Keep pawsitive thoughts for him!
OUR FEATURED FOSTER – SNOOP NEEDS A HOME
11.18.15 Snoop's family adopted him when he was just a few months old. Unfortunately, due to family circumstances, they can not keep him. He is a six year old Border Collie mix. Snoop is a great dog who wants to please. He knows basic commands sit, down and stay and is very responsive to love and leadership. Aside from just being with his person, car rides and walks are some of Snoop's favorite activities. Border Collie's are known for their intelligence and sensitivity and Snoop has both. He is shy with strangers and new dogs. He has lived his entire...
WE HONOR OUR VETERANS – FORGOTTEN HEROES
11.11.15 We greatly appreciate our Veterans - Human and Canine. The bond between people and dogs can be very strong. Dogs are called man's best friend for a reason. They have worked side by side with human soldiers throughout history. Sometimes they are forgotten. Today we remember a very special Veteran, his name is Sergeant Stubby. He lived from 1916 or 17 to March 16, 1926 and was a stray wandering the Yale University campus while the 102nd infantry were training. He hung around and Corporal Robert Conroy grew attached to him. When it was time for them to ship...
HAPPY HALLOWEEN – HOW TO PICK THE BEST PUMPKIN
10.31.15 Take your dog....it's as simple as that. Dogs pick great pumpkins! Enjoy Halloween and keep your pets safe and secured.
JACK – SENIOR FOSTER FEATURED ON FOX 11
10.26.15 Our senior foster, Jack, was featured on Fox 11's Pet Project last week. Unfortunately, he did not find a forever home from the showing. The good news is, we have made a decision. Jack now has a forever home and a job! He will be a permanent and important part of the Nika Animal Network as our senior dog advocate and we embrace him with open paws. His new title is....Director, Senior Dog Advocate.
DUKE AND SNOOP NEED HELP FINDING A NEW HOME TOGETHER OR SEPARATELY
10.19.15 We were contacted this week about Duke and Snoop and we are trying to help network them. Unfortunately, their family is unable to keep them and they are seeking help to find them a new home. They can be adopted separately if two wonderful homes come forward. They do not want to take them to the shelter and are doing everything they can to avoid that. Duke is an 8 year old Beagle mix (about 20lbs). He loves to sunbathe and run around the yard. Very sweet disposition. He is house trained. Neutered and up to date on...
ADOPTED! FIND FIONA A SPECIAL HOME – DONE
10.12.15 We are so proud to announce Fiona has been adopted! When her new dad, Michael, initially called about her, it sounded like the perfect match....and it is. He had been looking for a special companion for a few years. Knowing that, a friend texted him Fiona's picture from her appearance on the morning news. When Michael saw her she sparked his interest and the rest is history. We are so grateful to Michael for adopting Fiona and giving her a loving home. She is a special dog and now she has a special dad. We know they are...
DEWEY – REST IN PEACE

FIONA, FROM FOSTER TO FOREVER HOME…SOON WE HOPE
9.23.15 Fiona was brought to the shelter as a stray - no tags or micro-chip - nobody claimed her. She is a Cairn Terrier with the sweetest disposition and she is pretty calm and quiet. The vet estimates her around 5 years old. Fiona loves to go for car rides and lays down quietly in the back seat. It is hard to imagine how a precious dog like Fiona is left to run the streets. It looks like she has had puppies and may have been used for that purpose - we don't know for certain. Her past will remain a...
ADOPTED! MATI GOES HOME
9.15.15 After living her young life seriously neglected, Mati will be living the life she was meant to have - being loved and cared for. We are so proud to announce she found the perfect home. Her new mom saw her on our recent Fox 11 showing and said to her family, "That's our dog!" And, she was right. Mati's family has a big heart for animals. They adopted Lucky from a shelter almost a year ago. He understands what Mati's been through. Mati and Lucky are about the same size and age - it was love at first sight....
JILL…GRATEFUL FOR THE GIFT OF TIME
9.3.15 Many of you have been asking about Jill and how she is doing. Given her advanced age of 10+ years and what she has been through in her life, she is doing well. Most of her vision is gone, but she still finds her way around. We take it one day at a time. As you may remember, she almost died a few months ago due to heart failure and we were faced with having to make a very difficult decision. Thankfully, our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Chong, gave us an option of trying a combination of medications. We...
Mati Update From Nika
9.2.15 Mati is doing very well and recuperating from her spay surgery. She has been through a lot this past week - 1st grooming; 1st walk; 1st surgery. Let's hope her 1st loving forever home comes soon. How could anyone neglect such a sweet little dog - it is hard to believe. She is so loving and just wants to please. Nika assured her the right home will come...
Mati Featured on Fox 11’s Good Day LA
8.27.15 Mati is a case of severe neglect. She is only a year and a half....not the way to start a life! We are going to change that - to be continued...
NEVER FORGET FRIDAY…REMEMBERING ATTICUS
8.14.15 The anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is August 29th. We honor the memory of all the Katrina dogs during August. Nika and I had the privilege of knowing one of them...his name was Atticus. He came to Los Angeles from the 9th Ward/St.Bernard Parish area of Louisiana and was named after the character in To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch. The Katrina dogs were held for a period of time so their owners could claim them. Nobody ever came forward for Atticus. When we met him, he had been living in a kennel facility for over a year. We fostered...
GRETA IS HOME!
8.7.15 We proudly announce Greta is home and doing great! She is such a special little dog. We were looking for the perfect people for her and they appeared. We are so grateful to Margaret and Chuck for adopting Greta and making her part of their lives. She could not have found better parents!

GRETA UPDATE FROM NIKA
7.13.15. Hey everyone....Just want you to know Greta has recuperated from her spay surgery and had a great visit with potential adopters this weekend. But, they decided they weren't 100% committed yet to adopting a dog. We appreciate them thinking it through and wish more people did that. Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. In the meantime, I am encouraging Greta, letting her know everything will be ok and the right home will come when it is supposed to...it always does!
GRETA LOOKING FOR A SPECIAL HOME
7.1.15 Found laying in the middle of the road at night, this precious little dog named Greta was picked up by an angel animal advocate. She was in severe shock, but not seriously injured. It took a few weeks for her to come out of her shell and bond with her foster mom. Greta is shy and timid and needs a home that is loving and patient with people that will help her feel safe and secure so she continues to blossom. We would love to find her a home where people are around a lot. She prefers a home...

JILL UPDATE…ONE DAY AT A TIME
https://youtu.be/4vIxbBou-74 https://youtu.be/NYIg2OkmRzI 6.24.15 What a difference a week can make. As you may know, Jill's heart was failing last week and she almost died. We are so grateful for the wonderful veterinary care she has received - a BIG thank you to Dr. Ron D. and Dr. Chong. Jill is currently on three medications and has responded very well. Hopefully, she can get back to visiting seniors soon. In the meantime, Jack made a visit to the senior facility without Jill. He looked forward to visiting with Mr. M., but his room was empty. Unfortunately, Mr....

6.12.15 Throwback Thursday has inspired us to create Never Forget Friday. Occasionally on a Friday, we will feature one of our past foster dogs. We remember May fondly for our first Never Forget Friday....
SENIORS FOR SENIORS…A quiet moment of connection
5.19.15 Our sweet seniors, Jack and Jill, love visiting senior humans and making their day a little brighter. They understand what it feels like to be a senior and are able to provide that special touch of love to senior humans....it's called Seniors For Seniors. Some moments can not be captured with a photo. One of those moments happened today with one of the residents. When Jack and Jill walk through the halls of the senior living facility, sad and distant faces turn happy and connected, even if is just for a few moments. Mr. M is one of...

FOSTER UPDATE FOR ZEKE
4.8.15 We have changed the spelling of Zeek's name to Zeke. There has been interest in him, but he is still waiting for his forever home. In the meantime, he is making great progress in our foster program. It is so rewarding to watch a dog transform...you can see the change in their eyes. Zeke has been with us for about three weeks. At the shelter he was so stressed in the noisy kennel run. He was confused and agitated after going through the trauma of being abandoned by his people. So, having some time to relax and get some...
ZEKE, A YOUNG INTELLIGENT DOG, FINDS HIMSELF HOMELESS AT THE SHELTER
3.18.15 This is Zeke and his life has not started off well. He is only about 7 months old and after living with his people since he was a young puppy, they decided they didn't have time for him anymore. So, they dropped him off at the shelter. Zeke is a Australian Shepherd mixed with possibly German Shepherd. He is highly intelligent and sensitive. He is very friendly and gets along with other dogs. He just needs people that are going to give him a lifetime commitment and the leadership he needs.
LACEY ADOPTED…ANOTHER VICTORY
3.1.15 We are so proud to announce that Lacey is now part of a special family and living the life she deserves! As Helen Keller once said, "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." This is really true when it comes to helping animals and finding dogs great homes. Lacey had many angel advocates helping her along the way and she is so grateful to all of you. We are so grateful to all of you, too!
Lacey Featured On FOX 11’s Pet Project

This is Lacey!
3.1.15 (Update: Lacey Adopted.) Not only is Lacey beautiful and unique, she is the sweetest dog. She is about five years old and has spent most, if not all, of her life alone in a small yard. Her owner was not able to give her what she needed and realized it was best to find her a new home. Thanks to an Angel Advocate, she found her way to us and is living in a foster home until she finds her Forever Home. Lacey is great with other dogs and loves people. She is very smart and sensitive and...
BLANKETS OF LOVE
2.4.15 We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters. We greatly appreciate your financial donations. We are also very grateful for your in-kind donations. Today we received three large bags full of blankets - we call them Blankets of Love. They were graciously donated by "Rusty's" mom. She adopted him a few years ago and remembered the blanket he came with. It was the blanket he slept with while in foster care. That blanket gave him a familiar place and scent during the transition into his new home. These blankets will provide comfort for our foster dogs. Rusty's...
RASCAL ADOPTED!

A few advocates stepped up to help Rascal so he didn't have to go to a shelter. He is currently living in a foster home. He is the sweetest little guy. We are hoping he finds a loving forever home soon.
A New Year Of Hope For Jack And Jill
Author: Tressa Lucas The New Year is a time of gratitude and hope. We think upon what we have to be grateful for and what we hope for in the next year. I believe dogs do the same. They are grateful for the love we give them when they are adopted and for those that lose their homes or have never had a loving home - they still have hope for being adopted again. Unfortunately, many dogs find themselves abandoned and hoping for a new home. I have seen it time and time again, dogs brought to the shelter after...
